Why Joint Reconstruction?

Joints are formed by the ends of two or more bones with tissue called cartilage between them. Healthy cartilage serves as a protective cushion, allowing smooth, low-friction movement of the joint. If the cartilage becomes damaged by disease or injury, the tissues around the joint become inflamed, causing pain. With time, the cartilage wears away, allowing the rough edges of bone to rub against each other, causing more pain.

This process can decrease the activity of an individual due to their ailing joint. Orthopedic surgeons can replace or repair joints to alleviate this pain, and regain mobility of the joint.

Repair or Replace?

When only some of the joint is damaged, a surgeon may be able to repair or replace just the damaged parts. When the entire joint is damaged, a total joint replacement is necessary. To replace a hip or knee, a surgeon removes the diseased or damaged parts and inserts artificial parts, called prostheses or implants.

Less Can Be More!

Feather River Hospital is proud to offer hip resurfacing to those who qualify for the procedure. Hip resurfacing can prolong the life of an ailing joint postponing the need for a complete replacement. This procedure also allows an individual to regain a higher level of activity than they may get from a traditional implant.
